Bike fitting

What is a bike fit?

A bike fit is the process of changing variables of the bike to fit the rider. The idea is to meet the rider’s goals whether that is to maximize power and/or aerodynamics or to simply increase comfort and reduce pain.

Why get a bike fit?

Current research shows bike-fitting to be associated with increased odds of reporting a comfortable posture and not reporting pain while cycling [1]. Further research is needed to determine the presence of association between bike fitting and injury [1] however, if a current condition exists, such as PFPS or ITBFS, a bike fit serves as facet of treatment for these common cycling conditions.

How is a bike fit performed?

Bike fitting can be performed may different ways from 3D video camera systems to simply measuring joint angles. From a physiotherapist standpoint, a physio will ask you questions to ensure the fit meets your specific goals. Next, a few take measurements are taken of your bicycle and your body. You will then be asked to pedal your bike in a stationary trainer as you normally would for a few minutes. This allows the physio to assess the dynamics of how you ride. Next, adjustments are made and you are assessed again by your physio. If you are comfortable in your new riding position and you and your physio like the changes, the values are recorded and you are provided a copy.

Often, your physio will follow-up within a week or two to ensure you are setting well into your new position. This is important to ensure your goal was met for it takes a few rides for things to settle in.
